Are you looking to get your house painted but not sure if the current status of the weather and season will affect it?
Two of the most important factors affecting if paint applies properly are temperature and humidity.
When the temperature is hot like most summer days here DFW, the surface of the paint can skin over before the lower layers have a chance to dry. Products applied in excessively hot temperatures can dry too quickly and often develop bumps, blisters and other imperfections, such as lifting, cracking, or discoloration.
The type of paint also has alot to do with the drying process:
Oil-based paint: the surrounding temperature should be 45-70°F for at least 48 hours.
Latex and acrylic paints: typically require temperatures above 50-75°F for 48 hours.
Lower temperatures can also cause issues if you’re looking to paint in the winter here in DFW. When it’s cold outside, paints get thicker and are harder to apply. Drying also takes much longer making it difficult for the paint to bond to surfaces. This affects paint jobs and results in cracking and chalking.
When it’s sticky and humid outside like a typical DFW summer day, it will take your paint much longer to dry. When the humidity levels are high, the moisture in the paint takes much longer to escape. This results in poor adhesion and a shorter lifespan.
In low humidity conditions, the dry airs pulls the moisture out of the paint too quickly. This rapid drying doesn’t allow the paint to stick properly and again results in poor durability.
- Overall the ideal conditions are 55-75 degrees Fahrenheit, 70-80% humidity and a gentle breeze
- A light breeze is ideal to properly dry paint. If it’s too windy you can concentrate on sheltered sides of your home until conditions improve.
- Don’t paint in super hot weather or direct sunlight. Paint on the shaded sides first or start ahead of the sun and adjust your painting as the sun moves above.
- Overcast and cloudy days are the best for painting.
